Classic re-hashing, prequels, sequels, and retakes have always been a safe bet for publishers to get gamers interested (or re-interested) in a franchise. In this case, Sega is refueling the fire that is Alien Syndrome; a game that was a classic run-and-gun action game on past-prime consoles, which featured 2D sprites. The new game, now slated for the Wii and PSP, is a 3D action-RPG title that features tons of gameplay options, character enhancements, weapons and enemies.
This, however, is not to be confused with the recent announcement regarding Fox Interactive and Sega joining forces for a series of Alien games to be made based on the movie franchise. Alien Syndrome is a completely different beast, or rather, a completely different species altogether. This isometric RPG action title will place gamers in the role of Aileen Harding. The protagonist is a mysterious woman who players will guide through the game, unveiling her ties to the Alien Syndrome and dealing with her personal struggle to fight against the horde of nasty alien creatures.
What’s interesting though is that the designers wanted to take the original Alien Syndrome story and evolve it into the kind of intriguing and griping pillar of storytelling some games are known for, at present. Everything that originally made the game a classic on the Sega is something Totally Games’ designers didn’t want to abandon while developing this new title. So hopefully, story wise, the game won’t be a flimsy cover for a gimmicky game.
The game itself will take players through a venturous atmosphere of cityscapes, spaceships and even alien planets. But before getting started and embarking on their adventure, players will have the option to specify skills, special abilities and “hone” their character. Throughout the game players will also be able to purchase items and upgrades using Aileen’s indestructible robot ally that is also a handy, traveling vendor.
